Pouillon wrote this work while he was in prison for his roles in the bankruptcy of the a company that he helped to create, but the novel still won the influential Les Deux Magots award.

The contents of this work are told through the diary of the abbey master builder, and ends with notes on 'The Schism', 'The Cloister at Le Thoronet', and 'The Cistercian Order'.
