Description

An Important Work, Colour Plates, Folding Maps, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

The first volume of 'the Journals of James Cook' issued in four by the Hakluyt Society. This volume is complete in itself.

Edited by J C Beaglehole, with extensive introductions and notes.

Comprising the narrative of Captain James Cook's first voyage in 1768 to 1771. An expedition combined with the Royal Navy and Royal Society to the South Pacific Ocean, aboard the HMS Endeavour. The aim was to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun, and to find evidence of the undiscovered southern land.

In 1769, they reached New Zealand, which was the second time Europeans reached the island country, and spent six months charting its coast.

A very successful voyage, in 1770 they became the first known Europeans to reach the east coast of Australia.

Upon their return, the crew sworn secrecy on the lands discovered.

Profusely illustrated throughout with multiple maps and plates both plain and in colour.
