The first UK edition of this work, translated by Joseph K. Yamagiwa. 

A Japanese classic tale written in the eleventh century. Historical tales covering Japanese history from 850 to 1025. 

Told by two old raconteur telling the history of their country; this device became a distinguishing mark in Japanese historical tale, which combines historical and literary elements. Their story is questioned and commented upon by other characters, which allows vividness and the addition of a commentary and opinions. 

Modelled after traditional Chinese history books, this volume consists of preface, succession of emperors, stories of ministers, and a miscellaneous of stories.

The present complete translation of the Okagami was prepared for the Japanese literature series of the UNESCO. 

With the unclipped dust wrapper. 

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear. Inscribed by a previous owner to the front free endpaper, dated 1976. The dust wrapper is unclipped and very smart with minor shelf wear and a slight chipping to the top extremity of the rear wrap, and a minor sunning to the spine, as well as a slight closed tear to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean.
