Numerous illustrations accompanying the text. Collated complete. Between 1923 and 1945, Robert Gunther produced a 14-volume set of books on Early Science in Oxford. These two volumes are the reprints of the first and second of this set. Volume I contains Part I on chemistry, Part II on mathematics, and Part III and IV on physics and surveying. Volume II explores astronomy. Both volumes are primarily concerned with scientific and measuring instruments. Robert Gunther (1869-1940) was a historian of science and a zoologist. Between 1926 and 1930, Gunther founded the Museum of the History of Science in the Old Ashmolean building, with some difficulty: few of his contemporaries shared his passion for historical scientific instruments. The museum's initial collection was based on the scientific instrument collection of his friend Lewis Evans, donated in 1924.
