The first edition of this charming volume comprised of the reproduction of sixty tipped in occidental illuminated miniatures from manuscripts in the Austrian National Library. These were selected from around ten thousand miniatures which are kept in one of the oldest libraries in the world, not accessible to the public. They represent eight centuries of a masterly and humble artistry that lives on to this day.
The original German edition in its slipcase, with a prospectus loosely inserted which translates the description of the illustrations to English.
The text is by Franz Unterkircher, with a preface by Josef Stummvoll.
Collated, complete.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The slipcase is only sound with shelf wear and chipping, the top edge is slightly detached from the rear board. Loosely inserted, a prospectus containing the translation to English of the descriptions accompanying each illustrations. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with sixty stunning reproductions of illuminated miniatures in colour tipped in to the volume. Collated, complete.
