Innes was a notable Scottish author best known for his crime fiction and works of literary criticism. His crime novels often featured the detective Sir John Appleby, appearing in this set in 'Appleby's Other Story' and 'An Awkward Lie'. The other two novels in this set, 'Money From Holme' and 'The Mysterious Commission', are standalone crime and suspense novels.

In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, generally smart, with some marks to the boards, heavier to the spines of 'Awkward Lie', 'Appleby's Other Story', and 'Mysterious Commission'. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Edge wear to the dust wrappers, heavier to the head and tail of the spines. Light rubbing to the wraps, and minor marks to the wraps. Chip to the head of the front wrap of 'Money From Holme'. Tide mark to the reverse of the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
