What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

Comprising two works by Tolkien:

'On Fairy-Stories' which was originally published in 1947 in 'Essays Presented to Charles Williams'. This work discusses the fairy-story as a literary form and was presented by Tolkien as the Andrew Lang lecture at the University of St Andrews. It explores Tolkien's own underlying philosophy of his fantastical writings.

'Leaf by Niggle' originally published in the 'Dublin Review'. It is a short story regarding an artist named Niggle, who lives in a society that does not value art.

With the original unclipped dustwrapper.

This is one of the early copies with Tolkien's signature stamped to the title page.

A scarce publication by Tolkien, particularly in such a bright condition.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. With unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, the work is in a very smart condition with light shelfwear to the extremities. Dustwrapper is also very smart, with small chips to the head and tail of spine. Spine is slightly sunned. A few light scattered spots to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Spots to the fore-edge and to the first and last few pages.
