1964 Tokyo Olympiad 1964
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Colour Plates, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce
A scarce commemorative work celebrating the 1964 Summer Olympics, held in Tokyo.
Trilingual with the text and captions written in Japanese, English, and French.
Strikingly illustrated in colour and monochrome throughout, including two large colour folding plates.
The photographs in this work vividly show both the opening and the closing ceremony, and many of the sporting events, from fencing to diving.
The 1964 Summer Olympics was the first time the Olympics were held in Asia, a landmark moment which showed the vast progress the country had made since the end of World War Two. Yoshinori Sakai, who lit the Olympic flame at this event, was born in Hiroshima on the day that the atomic bomb was dropped on the city. His selection for this key moment symbolised Japan's postwar reconstruction and peace.
