First Edition, in the publisher's original paper wraps.

Illustrated with numerous full-page illustrations throughout both volumes, taken from a variety of artistic sources.

With a letter enclosed in one of the volumes which reads, 'D. Could Gavin please save this for Erich Linder- it is his own copy he asked me to save for him. P'. Erich Linder (1924-1983) was an international literary agent who represented authors like Ezra Pound, Franz Kafka, and Philip Roth.

This wonderful set includes the first eight issues of  'Art and Literature: An International Review'. These publications were published quarterly, with these particular works from 1964 to 1966.

'Art and Literature' was described as 'a remarkably integrated magazine despite its wide range of subjects and sympathies', with 'an elegant showcase for important new work from a variety of sources'. 

Issue 1 includes 'Wide Sargasso Sea' by Jean Rhys and 'Fifty Years of Little Magazines' by Cyril Connolly. With eleven pages of full-page illustrations and several in-text illustrations.

Issue 2's contents include 'Who Is The Third That Walks beside You?' by William Burroughs, 'Two Pieces for Hamlet' by Anthony Burgess, and 'Poems' by Barbara Guest, with twenty-three full-page illustrations and seven in-text illustrations.

Issue 3 includes ''The Skaters' by John Ashbery, 'Eponine' by Georges Bataille, 'The World as Object' by Roland Barthes and 'The Dice-Cup' by Max Jacob, with thirty-two pages of full-page illustrations. 

Issue 4 includes 'Eros Gone Wild' by Denis Roche, 'The General Returns from One Place to Another' by Frank O'Hara', and 'Sketchbook Notes' by Jasper Johns. With over twenty pages of illustrations. 

Issue 5 includes 'The Feast of Love' by Virgil Thomson and 'Beautiful and Interesting' by Larry Rivers and David Hockney. With thirteen pages of illustrations. 

Issue 6 includes 'A Last Lesson in Geography' by Laura Riding and 'Surprise Visit' by Antonia White. With twenty three pages of illustrations.

Issue 7 includes 'Sea Level' by Joseph Ceravolo and 'Back in the Thirties' by Myfanwy Piper. With twenty-eight pages of illustrations. 

Issue 8 includes 'Phone to the Poets in Moscow' by Koichi K. O'Hara and'On the Step' by Andre du Bouchet. With eighteen pages of illustrations. 

Collated, complete.

Condition

In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, very smart. Minimal bumping and wear to the extremities and age-toning to the margins of wraps and spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to the margins of text. With the odd spot and handling mark.
