This is the autobiography of Walter Starkie, an Irish scholar, author and musician, head of the British Council in Spain during the Second World War, and leading authority on the Romani people. The dust wrapper notes this as 'an unconventional book by a most unconventional man'.

The nephew of English book illustrator Arthur Rackham, with whom he spent much of his childhood.

In the publisher's original cloth binding, in price unclipped dust wrapper. Shelf wear to spine head and tail, light spots of discolouration to boards. Small chip to head and tail of dust wrapper. Some minor general edgewear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
