Description

Early Edition, First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

A collection of four first editions and one second impression, by Margaret Drabble.

Bound in the publisher's original cloth with the original dust wrappers, four of which remain unclipped.

Written by English biographer, novelist and short story writer Margaret Drabble, who has received a number of awards, such as the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1967. Drabble's novels tend to surround a female protagonist, exploring the conflict between motherhood, societal expectations and other aspects of life.

This collection is comprised of:

'A Summer Bird-Cage' (1963), the second impression, published a year after the first edition. This was Drabble's first novel, telling the story of the relationship of two sisters.

'The Garrick Year' (1964), Drabble's second novel, follows the family, marriage and affair of the protagonist, Emma.

'The Millstone' (1965), which tells the story of a young, unmarried woman who becomes pregnant unexpectedly and decides to raise the child alone.

'Jerusalem the Golden' (1967), surrounding a woman who moves to London for university from the North of England.

'The Waterfall' (1969), a novel which has been labelled as 'experimental', narrated in the third person by Jane Gray, guiding the reader through her life.

Condition

Bound in the publisher's original cloth with the original dust wrappers, four are unclipped, with 'A Summer Bird-Cage' clipped. Externally, excellent, with minor shelf wear only. A slight lean to 'The Waterfall'. Dust wrappers are very smart, with light edge wear and the odd closed tear. Three slightly larger tears to 'A Summer Bird-Cage' wrap, which is also lightly soiled. A little sunning to the spine. The odd mark to wraps. Tape to the reverse of the wraps of 'The Millstone'. 'The Garrick Year' and 'The Waterfall'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with one or two spots to the fore edge.
