First edition of Thorvaldsens Portraetbuster by Else Kai Sass, complete in three volumes. 

Beautifully bound in quarter vellum with gilt and cloth boards. 

A lovely and extensive study of the portrait bust sculptures of Bertel Thorvaldsen, the influential Danish-Icelandic sculptor and medalist. He is widely regarded as a national hero, now commemorated and admired in the large single-artist museum the Thorvaldsen's Museum in Copenhagen. 

Else Kai Sass was a Danish art historian, working at the Thorvaldsen's Museum, a history of art professor at Aarthus University and a professor at the University of Copenhagen. This work is still widely considered the standard work on Thorvaldsen's portrait busts.
