A first edition of this work, published by Longmans in 1962.
With original, unclipped dust wrapper and a typed personal signed letter written by the author addressed to a Dr. Jackson taped to front paper, advising him on how to pack insects. Dated May 31st 1963.
This copy also includes three in text illustrations and extensive coloured plates. Collated complete.
Written by Elliot Pinhey, this work is a fascinating study of hawk moths native to Central and South Africa. It was published by the Trustees of the National Museums of Southern Rhodesia. Elliot Pinhey (1910-1999) was Sussex-born etymologist who worked in Africa and made major contributions to the field, particularly in regards to butterflies, moths and dragonflies.
Condition
In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper and cloth binding. Externally, smart. Small area of staining to extremities, in particular top front board and head of spine. Taped letter written by author to front free end paper. Dust wrapper is smart. Slight sunning to front and rear. Minor chipping to extremities, especially head of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
