Description

An Important Work, Folding Maps, Publishers' Original Binding

Twelve volumes out of a thirteen volume set. A linguistic atlas of Britain and the major work of dialectologist and war veteran Harold Orton. The Survey of English Dialects was undertaken between 1950 and 1961. It aimed to collect the full range of speech in England and Wales before local differences were to disappear. Standardisation of the English language was expected with the post-war increase in social mobility and the spread of the mass media. Included in this set: Volume I, Parts 1, 2, and 3: Six Northern Counties and Man (edited by Harold Orton and Wilfrid J. Halliday). This volume includes a map of the Northern network and nine books of responses to the survey. Volume II, Parts 1, 2, and 3: The West Midland Counties (edited by Harold Orton and Michael V. Barry). This volume contains a folding map to the start of each part. Volume III, Parts 1, 2, and 3: East Midland Counties and East Anglia (edited by Harold Orton and Philip M. Tilling). This volume contains a large fold out map and index of the network, showing localities recorded by each fieldworker and six books of responses. Volume IV, Parts 1, 2, and 3: The Southern Counties (edited by Harold Orton and Martyn F. Wakelin). This once again includes a large fold out map illustrating the network and localities recorded by each fieldworker. Collated and complete. This is a collection of ex-library books, and the library's ink inscriptions can be found on the tail of the spine of all volumes, except Volume I, Part 3, which contains a tiny bit of sticker residue, and Volume II, Part 3, which contains an ex-library sticker. Each book contains an ex-library bookplate from Hereford City Library, and each book contains a Hereford City Library ex-library stamp to the verso of the title page.
