Description

Fine Binding

Alexandra was the wife to Nicholas II, the last ruler of the Russian Empire. Known as Alix of Hesse, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England. Count R. L Sangorski was a prominent art collector famous for contributing to the John Marriot collection of Chinese Art. These works are listed on a receipt for binding issued to him in the 1980s, found with the sale of his collection. With an illustrated frontispiece of the Empress Alexandra. Bound in the 1980's after Asprey's acquisition of Zaehnsdorf bindery, who merged it with their previous acquisition of Sangorski and Sutcliff. This binding is likely to be Zaehnsdorf bindings, under the name of Asprey. Asprey & Co is gilt stamped to the front pastedown. This text examines the life of Alexandra, her marriage to Nicholas II, her haemophilia, the fall of the Russian empire and subsequently her death. Written by E M Almedingen, also known as Martha Edith Almedingen, a British novelist, biographer and children's author of Russian origin.
