First edition. Illustrated with two colour tipped in plates, two hundred and eleven photogravure plates, and numerous in-text images. Collated complete. Intended as a companion volume to her previous work Italian Villas and Palaces, this volume deals with the finest examples of Roman, Medieval, and early Humanist gardens as well as the later developments across Tuscany, Rome, the Veneto, and Northern Italy. An exploration of the splendours that caused the gardeners of the world to flock to Italy. Written by Marion Johnson, under her pen name of Georgina Masson, a British author, architectural historian, and photographer.
Condition
In the original red cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light fading to the board edges and the odd small mark. Original unclipped dust wrapper is worn with a 1" and 3" closed tear to the front panel. Small closed tears and creases to the panel edges with light sunning to the spine. Light marks to the panels. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with minor age toning to the endpapers.
