The first edition, first impression of this work by John Gunther. In the author's popular Inside series of continental surveys, with overviews of socio-political and economic situations surveyed by Gunther during his travels.

The present volume focuses on a later twentieth century Europe, after the Second World War. A continuation from Gunther's earlier survey Inside Europe, which told of the tortured world of Europe in the late 1930s, when the continent was dominated by Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin. In the present volume he compares a Europe after the war.

Illustrated with seven maps. 

Inscribed by the author to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie to the half title, 'For darling Audrey, with my love,' dated 1961.

Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the alleged illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. The present volume is from her library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire. 

She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. 



Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Inscribed by the author to the half title page, dated 1961. Internally, firmly bound. the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with seven maps.
