The novel follows Sicilian Prince Don Fabrizio during Garibaldi's invasion of Sicily, and the subsequent annexation of the island by the Kingdom of Italy. The novel explores the tensions between the old aristocracy and the rising bourgeoisie, and the changing relationship between the Church and state.

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, bright, with bumping to spine tail and small split in cloth at spine tail. Bookseller's label to front pastedown. Dust wrapper back strip lightly age toned, with small loss at back strip tail and edgewear to back strip head. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
