In this novel, Alleyn investigates the murder of a West End stage actress during her fiftieth birthday party.

The subject reflects Marsh's interest in the theatre, where she worked as a director for some time.

Marsh is regarded as one of the Queens of Crime of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, alongside Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, and Margery Allingham. Her best known character is Inspector Roderick Alleyn, a gentleman detective working for the Met Police.
