This is the twenty first novel to feature Roderick Alleyn. This novel regards the murder of a West End stage actress during her fiftieth birthday party. It explores Marsh's own enjoyment from the theatre as she was a director for some time.

Marsh is regarded as one of the many queens of crime, alongside Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, and Margery Allingham. Her best known character is Inspector Roderick Alleyn, a gentleman detective working for the Met Police.
