Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

The first U.S. edition of this work.

In the original unclipped dustwrapper.

Vita Sackville-West's biography on the life of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans, the Duchesse de Montpensier.

Montpensier, also known as 'La Grande Mademoiselle', was the greatest heiress in history, the only daughter of Gaston d'Orleans and Marie de Bourbon. Though she was faced with a string of prestigious proposal, including from Charles II of England, Montpensier declined them all, instead wishing to marry a lower courtier. Her cousin, Louis XIV, refused this engagement, resulting in a scandal at court. As a result, Montpensier died unmarried and childless.

Illustrated with sixteen plates.

Collated, complete.

Written by the noted Bloomsbury author Vita Sackville-West, well known today for her friendship and relationship with fellow author, Virginia Woolf. Sackville-West provided the inspiration for Woolf's beloved novel 'Orlando'. Sackville-West was also a noted garden designer at her house Sissinghurst, the garden of which is still celebrated today.
