First edition. An entertaining study of the origin and development of the comic and rhyming alphabet since Victorian times. Illustrated throughout by Michael Foreman, a British author and illustrator known for his children's books. Previously held in the library of Nicholas Wall, an English judge, President of the Family Division and Head of Family Justice for England and Wales. The Gentle Art of Lexicography as Pursued and Experienced by an Addict, 1963. First edition. Part language study, part memoir, this work explores Partridge's early years in New Zealand and his lifelong desire for learning. Smaller Slang Dictionary, 1976. Reprint of the second edition, originally published 1961. Written for the general public, this work includes important words that have survived generations and the slang of the twentieth century.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear only. Original dust wrappers are all unclipped other than the Smaller Slang Dictionary. Dust wrappers are smart with light shelf wear and chipping to the extremities, with the odd small closed tear, and light sunning to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light age toning.
