Description

Fine Binding, First Edition, Illustrated, Signed Binding

The first edition of this historical novel from William Makepeace Thackery to be published in book form, with these two volumes released in 1858 and 1859. This work was originally issued in twenty-four monthly parts by the publisher, with the first appearing on the 1st November, 1857.

In handsome signed full calf bindings from Hatchards of Picadilly.

This work is illustrated by Thackery himself, with an number of vignette illustrations, twenty-three plates to volume I, twenty-three plates to volume II, and an illustrated title page to each volume. Collated, complete.

Critical reception of the book was on the whole largely favourable, and the novel has continued to be considered a standard work of nineteenth century fiction, though many critics have held that the novel's plotting was not one of the works strong points.

The publisher's original cloth front and rear wraps are bound in to the rear of each volume, with the back strips laid down.

With a single page publisher's advertisement to the rear of volume I.

Condition

In full calf signed bindings, with gilt detailing. The publisher's original cloth front and rear wraps are bound in to the rear of each volume, with the back strips laid down. Light fading to back strips, with rubbing to spine head and tail. One scratch to the rear board of each volume, with minor loss to leather at vol II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot, as is common with this work. Spots concentrated to plate perimeters, and preliminaries of vol II.
