What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce, With Dustwrapper

The first edition of this work. A very scarce volume, held institutionally by two libraries only.

A fascinating work by Robert Standish, illustrating the life of E. Phillips Oppenheim, a highly prolific writer of best-selling genre fiction. With over one hundred novels published, and forty books of collected short stories, as well as other pieces appearing in magazines, Oppenheim provided the ideal "escape literature" in many ways; notably easy to read, his work was seen as popular entertainment, with eccentric characters and fast actions.

Standish wrote of this book: "I do not intend to portray him a halo, nor equip him with horns and a tail. I will not hesitate when the occasion arises to poke fun at his pretentious and vanities [....] His amazing indiscretions when he was alive were an essential part of him and can no more be omitted from his life-story than Cleopatra can be omitted from that of Anthony."

With the price clipped dustwrapper.
