Published over thirty-five years after the death of the hero of the Nimrod and Endurance expeditions, this work provides insight into 'Shackleton's hitherto unpublished papers, diaries and correspondence' including letters to his wife. The authors also interview surviving members of his expeditions, all to provide an intimate narrative of Shackleton's life.

Illustrated with a number of photographic plates.
