The first edition. The official account of the first expedition to enter Antarctic regions with mountaineering as a principal objective. Sutton along with four companions set out to explore the unclimbed mountains in the interior of the island, the great Allardyce Range. Secondary objects were glaciology and observation of penguins, seals, and birds.

Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. The dust wrapper is price-clipped and sound with some shelf wear and chipping, some sunning to the spine, a minor tape repairing internally to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. With numerous plates of photography in black and white.
