What Our Customers Say...
Description
Illustrated, Local Imprint, Publishers' Original Binding
Across eighteen volumes, seventeen of which are signed, Winstone offers a fantastic photographic record of Bristol from the dawn of photography up until 1959. Containing between 100 and 250 photographs per volume, each of the four paperback and sixteen hardback volumes is prefaced by a different author. In the period before 1939 the dates run backwards, whereas books covering period after his birth in 1909 run forwards. From 1950s onward, Winstone took photographs of scenes which were soon to change as a result of redevelopment with the intent of publishing them in book form a decade later. All volumes present are signed to the recto of the front endpaper or at the title page except for Bristol's Suburbs in the 1920s &1930s which is lacking a signature. Five volumes contain several pages of advertisements for local Bristol merchants to the front and the rear. Nine volumes contain a form to the rear. The form enabled contemporary reads to purchase more volumes. Three volumes have pages of amendments tucked in.
Condition
In the original hardback and paperback bindings. Externally, generally smart. Bristol Fashion, Bristol Tradition and Bristol Suburbs in the 1920s and1930s, and Bristol in the 1880s are a little more rubbed than the rest of the volumes. Some marginal bumping to the head and tail of the spines, a little more bumped to the head of As it was 1866-1860 and the tail of Bristol Blitzed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean throughout all 18 volumes, with the odd bit of light foxing at the endpapers.
