Thomas Gray was an English poet, letter-writer, scholar, and professor at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Although he only published thirteen poems in his lifetime, being extremely self-critical, he became very popular in the literary scene. He was offered the position of Poet Laureate in 1947, but declined. He was mostly known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, published in 1751.

In the publisher's original burgundy cloth binding, with titles stamped in gilt to spine. externally lovely, with minor shelfwear only. inscribed by previous owner to front free endpaper: "to Daddy, with much love from Richard and Peter on his 27th wedding anniversary," dated August 1955. Dustwrapper is very smart and price-clipped, with minor shelfwear only and minor handling mark to front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. With frontispiece and seven illustrations.
