Description
Illustrated, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
Robert Gibbings was a renowned Irish artist and author, best known for playing a prolific and vital role in the revival of wood engraving in the twentieth century. As one of the founding members of the 'Society of Wood Engravers' in 1920, Gibbings produced copious wood-engraved illustrations for fictional works, including his own texts such as this one. This work recounts the love between Toi-ommo chief of Felletoa on the island of Vava'u and the beautiful Lyfotoo, originally recorded in the narrative of 'William Mariner', an English seamen who was held prisoner on the Lifuka island in the Kingdom of Tonga from 1806 to 1810. Within this work Gibbings captures the love story in twenty three beautiful engravings, that clearly demonstrate his skill as a wood engraver. Complete with the original price-clipped dustwrapper.
