Description

First Edition

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), writing under his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an author primarily of children's fiction known for 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and his poems 'Jabberwocky' and 'The Hunting of the Snark', poems defined as being literary nonsense.

Edited by Roger Gilbert Lancelyn Green (1918-1987), a founding member of the Inklings, along with C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. As well as innumerable works for children, he wrote many biographies and was particularly interested in Dodgson. After his publication of 'The Story of Lewis Carroll', Dodgson's nieces invited him to edit his diary, this being the work he produced. It is unclear as to whether Green had unrestricted access to all of Dodgson's diaries as they were. Green concluded that Dodgson was fascinated by small girls.

Of Dodgson's original thirteen diaries, at least four volumes as well as removed pages of text are missing, and it is uncertain who removed them, although it is widely believed that this was his family's attempts to preserve his and their own name.
