Lascelles was a British literary scholar, specialising in Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, and Walter Scott.

In this work, she examines Shakespeare's intentions regarding 'Measure for Measure', his inspiration in European literature, and her assertion that 'the complexity of Measure for Measure is the necessary condition of its greatness'.

With a small ink inscription to the rear flyleaf.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, fine. Dust wrapper age toned to back strip, with light chipping to back strip head, and small ink inscription to front flyleaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
