With the original unclipped dustwrapper. Published as a part of the 'Studies in Modern European Literature and Thought' series which had Erich Heller as the general editor. To this work Murdoch discusses Sartre's place in the history of philosophy, of political thought and of the novel. She analyses and evaluates the different strands of Sartre's rich and complex oeuvre. She begins by providing a critical analysis of Sartre's novels and closes with a judgement upon his theory of la litterature engagee. Iris Murdoch was a British novelist and philosopher, born in Ireland. Primarily her novels focus on themes of morality, spirituality and sexuality. A prominent philosopher, she is now increasingly accredited for her work in the field of philosophy, most notably her work on the reinterpretation of Aristotle and Plato, as well as her discussions of moral philosophy. In her lifetime Murdoch wrote 26 novels, as well of a series of short stories and several philosophical papers. An informative work, which is important in its stance of works on Sartre, and also that it is the first published work by Iris Murdoch.

In the publisher's original cloth binding and held in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, very smart with just some minor shelfwear to the head and tail of spine. Dustwrapper is smart with minor chips to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Small loss to the head of dustwrapper due to chipping. Sunning to the spine of dustwrapper. Small patch of rubbing to the front wrap. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
