The first editions, first impressions of these two essay collections from the author of 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' and 'Animal Farm'.

Including the 1950 first impression of 'Shooting an Elephant', consisting of nine essays, and nine further pieces drawn from Orwell's weekly column that appeared in 'Tribune'.

The second work is the posthumously published 1953 first impression of 'England Your England', consisting of eleven essays written between 1937 and 1948, including criticism of the work of Arthur Miller, and essays on mining and the Spanish civil war.

With contemporary inscriptions to the front free endpaper of each volume.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine heads and tails, with fraying to 'Elephant' back strip head and tail. Light fading to 'England' back strip and board perimeters, with discolouration to back strip and board perimeters of 'Elephant'. Inscriptions to front free endpapers. Head of front hinge of 'England' starting, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
