First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

The first edition of this work. The first novel by the author, who was already known for his critical and miscellaneous writings. A science fiction novel, where the protagonist commits suicide, leading to a quest through space and time to find the meaning of life. 

With unclipped dustwrapper.

In the original, unclipped dustwrapper, issued without a spine to display the beautiful gilt to spine of volume.

Part of the Bibliothéque de la Pléiade, an editorial collection created in 1913. All the volumes in the series are bound in leather, colour coded according to the period, with gilt to spine and printed on bible paper.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding, with titles stamped in gilt to spine. Externally, very smart with slight shelfwear only. Inscribed by the previous owner to front free endpaper, dated 29th February '50. Dustwrapper is smart, unclipped and with minor shelfwear. Small pen inscription by a previous owner to rear flyleaf, who also decorated in ink the spaces in between letters in the title to rear wrap. Internally, firmly bound. minor faint scattered spotting throughout.
