Volumes I, II, and VI of Winston Churchill's memoirs of the Second World War. A mixed set, with first editions of volumes II and VI. With eighteen plates to volume I, and twenty plates to volume II, including three folding maps. With twenty seven plates to volume VI, including eleven folding maps. Across the set, Churchill takes a broad view of the geopolitical situation whilst offering a unique insider perspective of political and military manoeuvres. Churchill examines the events surrounding the outbreak of the Second World War, Britain's decision to become involved, and his appointment to Prime Minister in the first volume, whilst volume II deals with the period between May 1940 to the end of the year, including the Dunkirk evacuation. The final volume covers the climax of the Normandy landings, as well as important moments including the Yalta conference, the suicide of Hitler, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Bookplates to the front and rear paste downs of volume I. Bookplate reads 'this is the property of Mr. H. Austin. The Towers, Upper Armley, Leeds, 12. Please return in clean condition when read'.
Condition
In the publisher's original black cloth binding, found in the unclipped dust wrapper. All three volumes are lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, and the top corners of volumes I and II are a little bent to the front board. The wraps of volume I and II both have a tear at the rear board. Volume I is missing some wrap to the head of the spine, and volume II is missing a little wrap at the front joint near the tail of the spine, and at the rear joint near the head. Both wraps also have some small closed tears along the top edge. The wrap to volume VI is in good condition, with just some small closed tears to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout.
