Venus and Adonis is a narrative poem first published in 1593, widely considered to be Shakespeare's first publication. It tells of Venus' unrequited love and seduction of Adonis. It is pastoral in nature, containing discourses on love and nature.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) remains one of the most influential and recognisable figures in the history of English literature, seen as the world's greatest dramatist. His work consists of thirty-nine plays, over one hundred and fifty sonnets and three long narrative poems. His plays continue to be widely studied and adapted across a plethora of forms, and consist of tragedies, such as 'Romeo and Juliet', histories, including his biographies of English Kings such as 'Richard III', and comedies, such as 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
Designed by Peter Rudland, a mid-twentieth century illustrator. Containing his beautiful and minimalist line drawings depicting the poem.

In the publisher's original full cloth binding with an unclipped dust wrapper. Externally generally smart, with a little occasional discolouration. Dust wrapper is slightly sunned to the spine. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
