Description

First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed, Uncommon, With Dustwrapper

The first edition.

Bound in the publisher's original cloth, with the vanishingly scarce, unclipped dust wrapper.

Signed by the author, inscribed to Sudhindra Nath Ghose, a Bengali novelist known for his collections of fairy and folk tales. Cowie has written: 'To Sudhin N. Ghose from Donald Cowie (because he was appreciative)'.

Written by British author Donald Cowie, who was known primarily for his science-fiction and fantasy novels, most of which were set in the future.

'The Rape of Man' or 'The Zoo Let Loose' tells the fantastical story in which animals try to take over the world from humans, putting Mankind on trial.

Cowie commenced writing this novel is 1942, however was dissuaded from publishing during the Second World War due to satire directed at those figures who were in charge at the time. The novel was then published for the first time in 1947, although Cowie did not find it necessary to alter any aspect of the story.

Condition

Bound in the publisher's original cloth, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, sound, with damp staining causing loss to colour to the cloth, mainly to the front board. Light bumping to the extremities and the odd mark, with a small tear to the front joint. Ink inscription to front endpaper. Dust wrapper is very good, with light edge wear, the odd tear to the extremities and slight loss to the head and tail of the spine. A little sunning to the spine and the odd mark to wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the occasional mark.
