Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

A collection of six sensational novels by the popular author, Agatha Christie, known for her many detective stories and short stories, particularly those featuring the beloved Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

Comprising:

Death Comes as the End, the third UK impression of 1947. Originally published in 1944 in the US. This novel is the only one not to be set in the twentieth century and featuring non-European characters. The first full-length novel to mix historical fiction and whodunit. It is set in Thebs in 2000 BC as a quiet Egyptian family are disturbed by the return of Imhotep with his new concubine, and deaths start happening. One of the only five novels by Christie not to be adapted or any sort of adaptation.

They Came to Baghdad, the first edition of 1951. Inspired by Christie's travels to Baghdad, this novel is one of the few which belong to the genres of spy and action fiction rather than whodunit and mysteries. The plot evolves around Baghdad as the chosen location for a secret summit of superpowers about the development of an unidentified weapon. Only one man can prove the nature of this secret weapon: British agent Carmichael.

Mrs. McGinty's Dead, the first UK edition of 1952, preceded by the US edition by one month. This novel features Hercule Poirot, the popular eccentric Belgian detective, and Ariadne Oliver. A whodunit 'village mystery', notable for its wit and comical detail. The arrest of a murder suspect leads Poirot for a search of the true culprit.

Cat Among the Pigeons, the first edition of 1959. In this novel, Poirot doesn't make an appearance until the final third of the novel. A book that relates to Christie's international adventures: after Prince Ali Yusuf is overthrown, his friend hides priceless jewels in Jennifer Sutcliffe's tennis racquet. These should belong to the prince's cousin, Princess Shaista, but are nowhere to be found. Poirot investigates to find that people and things are not exactly what they seem.

The Pale Horse, the first edition of 1961. Featuring detective Ariadne Oliver as a minor character. Mrs. Davis is on her deathbed when she gives her last confession to Father Gorman; along with her confession is a terrible secret and a list of names. Father Gorman is struck dead in the fog however, and as police starts investigating, a young hero pieces together some evidence that may lead to the right path.

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side, the first edition of 1962. The novel features the popular character of Mrs Marple solving the mysterious murder of Heather Badcock in St. Mary Mead.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. 'They Came to Baghdad' has a faint minor inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1977. The cloth of the spine of 'Death Comes as the End' and 'Mrs McGinty's Dead' is slightly faded. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are clean with only a hint of age toning, particularly to 'Death Comes as the End.' The latest novels are brighter.
