Description

Fine Binding, First Edition, Illustrated

The first edition of this particular anthology, with an introduction by Henry Seidel Canby.

Longfellow was an American poet and educator. He was one of the five New England Fireside Poets. His best known works include 'Paul Revere's Ride', 'Evangeline' and 'The Song of Hiawatha'. This anthology is a selection of Longfellow's favourite poems he wrote.

Illustrated throughout, from drawings by Edward A Wilson who was known for his work on the Limited Editions Club books.

Collated, complete.

In a fine binding by renowned firm Sangorski and Sutcliffe as a Christmas gift from Stanley Bray, who worked at the firm for over 60 years. He was a close friend Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie and bound several books for her as gifts. This was bound by Bray personally and he has stamped 'Xmas S.B 1947' to the front pastedown in lieu of the regular Sangorski and Sutcliffe binding stamp.

From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field) at Julian’s Park. Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools.

A beautiful copy of this important poet's works.
