This collection of essays by George Orwell was published the year after his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy's death. They essays are predominantly wartime pieces, and cover a variety of topics, including popular culture and literature.
Essays include 'Charles Dickens', 'Boys' Weeklies', 'Benefit of Clergy: Some Notes on Salvador Dali', and 'Wells, Hitler and the World State', which was a response to H. G. Wells' 'Guide to the New World'. The final essay discusses P. G. Wodehouse.
This work was considered by the Orwell himself to be one of his most important works.
With a contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper, and a single page of advertisements to the rear.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Fading to back strip, with light fading to tail of rear board, and further mark to rear board. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, but clean. Small closed tear to head of page 9-10.
