What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce, With Dustwrapper

First edition, very scarce.

In the original unclipped dust wrapper.

Illustrations include a frontispiece and sixteen full-page photographs.

'Animals Are My Hobby' is Lintz's memoir about her experience breeding Saint Bernards, leading to an interest in raising chimpanzees and gorillas. Lintz owned two gorillas named Buddy and Massa, as well as an assortment of chimpanzees and orangutans. Though she taught them to wear clothes, eat at the table, and generally do what children do in an entertaining fashion, Lintz asserted that her primary reason for owning these animals was to show 'a sympathy for creatures that in many respects come very close to human beings'.

Gertrude Davies Lintz (1880-1968) was a English-American dog breeder and socialite who was well known for keeping exotic animals in her Brooklyn home.

This memoir eventually inspired the film 'Buddy', which was released in 1997.

Collated, complete.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart. Cloth remains bright, with a discoloured mark on the bottom corner of boards, and on the top edge of the front board. A bit of minimal bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Bookseller's label on front pastedown. Dust wrapper is very bright on the front wraps, with some marks and a bit of discolouration on the rear wraps. Some edgewear has resulted in a bit of loss primarily to the head of the spine. A few closed tears to wraps have tape repairs to the reverse. A bit of discolouration to corners of fly leaves. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout.
