An extensive three volume set looking in detail at the history of China, published for the use of the armed services.The series was published during the Second World War, and offered an in-depth wealth of geographical knowledge on each country.
These three volumes present an interesting insight into China as it was during the Second World War.
Volume I, July 1944, looks at physical geography, history, and peoples. Illustrated with one folding map to the pocket to the rear, ninety eight plates, and many maps and plans. Collated, complete.
Volume II, June 1945, looks at modern history and administration. Illustrated with thirty two plates, and many maps and plans. Collated, complete.
Volume III, July 1945, looks at economic geography, ports, and communications. Illustrated with one folding map, eighty plates, and many maps and plans. Collated, complete.
Stamps of the Ministry of Defence to the front paste down of Volume II. Stamp of the Publicity Section of the British Embassy, Cairo, to the recto to the front endpaper of Volume III, alongside a stamp and ink note.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Cracks to the tail of the rear joint of Volume II, and to the head and tail of the front joint of Volume III. A little wear to the extremities of Volumes II and III. Spines of Volumes II and III are faded. Faded marks to the tail of the spine of Volume III. Marks to the boards and spines, with a heavy tide mark to the rear board of Volume II. Numerical ink to the front boards of Volumes I and III, and to the head of the spine of Volume III. Hinges of Volumes I and II are starting but firm. Stamp, pocket, and ink inscription to the front paste down of Volume II and ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Stamp of the Publicity Section of the British Embassy, Cairo, to the recto to the front endpaper of Volume III, alongside a stamp and ink note. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with only the occasional scattered spot. Stamp to the reverse of the title page of Volume II and III. Plate facing page 318 in Volume II is detached but present. Pages 71-78, including the plate facing page 78, in Volume III are detached but present.
