Description

Illustrated, Uncommon, With Dustwrapper

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original clipped dust wrapper. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 92 plates. Collated complete. The first edition of this beautiful book of Cecil Beaton's photography between 1923 and 1940, with a commentary and captions by Peter Quennell. Chapters are devoted to society portraits of royalty, politicians and the famous; travel photography; photographs of ballet scenes and of life at the outset of the Second World War. Beaton is best known for his fashion photographs and society portraits, and his photographs are considered some of the best representations of the Bright Young Things. He was also a leading war photographer for the Ministry of Information during the Second World War. One of his most enduring war images, of a 3-year-old Blitz victim, is documented in this volume. Peter Quennell (1905-1993) was an biographer, literary historian, editor, essayist, poet, and critic. In this book he offers some context to Beaton's photographs.

Condition

In publisher's original cloth binding, with original clipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in lovely condition. Good colour to both the cloth and dust wrapper. Three closed tears to the wrap: one to the front, one to the rear and one to the spine. Some wear to the extremities of the wrap, and a couple of losses to the spine of the wrap, one of which obscures Cecil Beaton's name. Internally, binding is slightly strained in places, but pages are very bright and clean.
