Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition, first impression of this political essay from George Orwell, expressing his views on socialism and the situation in wartime Britain.

Orwell controversially expresses the opinion that the British class system was hampering the war effort, and that in order to defeat Nazi Germany, Britain needed a socialist revolution.

Orwell's views about the dangers of totalitarianism and his conviction of the need for Democratic Socialism to defeat fascism and Soviet Communism are presented here without allegory, themes he would later explore in future novels including 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' and 'Animal Farm'.

This work was published on the 19 February 1941 as the first volume of a series co-edited by Orwell, in the Searchlight Books series of essays published by Secker & Warburg.
