What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed, With Dustwrapper
Number 345 of 775 copies of this Limited Edition, privately printed work produced, signed by author George Ryle Scott, and in the publisher's original dust wrapper.
Illustrated with twenty three plates and a number of vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.
Sections of this anthropological study are devoted to the relation between witchcraft and phallicism, the connection between serpent worship and phallicism, and 'the phallic factor in sexual promiscuity', along with an analysis of the role of phallic worship in various faiths and cultures.
Scott was a prolific British author of books about sexual intercourse and its history, including the 1936 work 'The Common Sense of Nudism', and his best known work, 'A History of Prostitution from Antiquity to the Present Day', also published in 1936. This was the first work of its kind to promote an attitude of tolerance, rather than abolitionist perspective.
A note to the half title remarks that 'the sale of this book is restricted to members of the medical and legal professions, anthropologists, psychologists, sociologists, ethnologists, and students of comparative religion'.
A public edition of the work did not appear until 1966.
