First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
The true first edition of this work, published by Faber and Faber in 1940. More commonly found is the first US edition of 1959. A collection of ghost tales by Sacheverell Sitwell, containing descriptions and studies of hauntings, strange phenomena, reported poltergeists, and more mysterious instances.
With decorations by Irene Hawkins and silhouettes by well-known illustrator George Cruikshank, from his etchings for Grimm's Household Tales and the Peter Schleimihl of Chamisso.
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally smart with minor shelf wear, head and tail of spine lightly bumped. Joan Badock's bookplate to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
