The scarce first UK edition. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. A popular work following the story of a poor Jewish pedlar from Poland, who moves to Russia to support the rise of Communism. Translated from the original Yiddish by Maurice Samuel. Israel Joshua Singer was a Polish-Jewish novelist, who wrote many works relating to Judaism, including, 'The Brothers Ashkenazi', and, 'Yoshe Kalb'. The half title page is present. With the previous owner's ink inscription, dated 1942 to the front free endpaper.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the edges. Light bumping to the spine. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free endpaper. The original unclipped dust wrapper is in smart condition. Sunning to the spine. Shelf wear to the edges and chipping to the spine. Age-toning and light spotting to the rear panel. Closed tear of about an inch to the lower rear panel. Internally, binding slightly strained but generally firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean with just the odd spot.
