The first edition of the 1939 issue of the Chums Annual.
This magazine was a boys' weekly newspaper founded in 1892 by Cassell and Company and published by the Amalgamated Press after 1927. A very sought-after boys' paper due to its bright red pictorial covers.
Comprising various book length stories, such as 'The Black Knight' by Arthur S Hardy, 'Intrigue in the Desert' by Robert Harding; long and short complete stories by various authors, including St John Pearce, Bruce Arthur, and W E Browns among others; A selection of articles on various topics, with titles such as 'An Adventure on Loch Carrib,' 'Earth's Most Precious Secret,' and 'The Pastime of Pier Fishing;' Pictorial articles, on great pioneers such as Buffalo Bill and Theodore Roosevelt and others; Humour, 'Batty Bertie and His Balmy Uncle' by Thompson; and music, with 'Sons of the Empire' by A. Morris-Gilbert.

Illustrated with four coloured plates, by Forbes, Walker, and Laurence east, seven special plates, and various other illustration in text throughout. Collated, complete.
Condition
In the original publisher's pictorial cloth binding. Externally excellent with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine as well as a minor closed tear to the cloth of the front joint. Inscribed by a previous owner to the front pastedown, dated 1938. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with four coloured plates, seven special plates, and various other illustration in text throughout.
