Woolf's essay confronts three questions: How should war be prevented? Why does the government not support education for women? Why are women not allowed to engage in professional work?
Originally conceived as a work of fiction and non-fiction simultaneously, with one half of the work dedicated to each style, Woolf eventually divided the work; the fiction portion became Woolf's most popular novel during her lifetime, 'The Years'.

With the former owner's inscription of Stephen Bagnall to the head of the front free endpaper.
A fascinating work written shortly before the onset of war, the views Woolf expresses in this essay have been described as feminist, pacifist, anti-fascist, and anti-imperialist.

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped illustrated dust wrapper. Light discolouration to back strip, with minor shelf wear to back strip tail. More significant discolouration to the tail of front and rear board, and tail of back strip. Former owner's inscription to the head of the front free endpaper. Significant discolouration to dust wrapper back strip, with moderate marks to front and rear wrap. Edge wear to head of dust wrapper, and tail of dust wrapper back strip. Small closed tears to head and tail of fold between back strip and front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
