'The Well of Loneliness' was a controversial work when first published, the editor of the Sunday Express James Douglas attacking the novel, and campaigning against it. Being forced to withdraw the publication, Jonathan Cape secretly leased the rights of the novel to Pegasus Press. These editions, published in France in the English language, made their way to the U.K.
The novel focuses on the upper-class woman Stephen Gordon, who is a lesbian living her live during the first couple of decades of the twentieth century.
By Radclyffe Hall, who is best known for this ground breaking novel.
With a commentary by Havelock Ellis, imbuing the novel with his own studies of human sexuality.
Condition
In a quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the spine and extremities. Spine label is lifting a little. A little discolouration to the boards and spine. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a few light spots.
